East Brisbane Croquet Club Singles Competition 2011
Report by Liz Kent
Something new under the Sun and $1000.00 in prize money was the promotion for the Inaugural Gateball Singles Event on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July, for East Brisbane and Queensland, and that is just what was had and enjoyed by all the contestants who came to play from Clubs between Gracemere in the North to Canberra in the South.
Gateball is as exciting for the Spectators as well as the players, there were more visitors watching the final than the number of players entered in the whole event and did they ever get a great deal of excitement in the finals. There were 2 blocks of 6 with the winner of one block playing the runner-up of the other block, and then the 2 runner-ups playing for 3rd and 4th position and the 2 winners playing for the Shield and 2nd place.
The semi finals were between Greg Featherstone of Gracemere and Bruce McAlister of Ipswich with Greg winning that round, the other game was between David Jones of Wynnum and David Hughes of Tamborine Mountains, this game was so close but it looked like David Jones had the game won, with only 2 minutes to play and a 5 point lead. Young David Hughes (13 years of age) pulled off a remarkable touch (Roquet) which enabled him to make gate 3 then touch his other ball sitting near the peg and was able to make Agari (peg out) with both balls, which levelled the game on points, Young David became the winner of that semi final on a count back of agaris.
The final then between Greg Featherstone and David Hughes was just as exciting to watch with David having to come from behind again to go and win. This is wonderful to see young people taking up a Mallet Sports and doing so well in it, he was a very happy boy with very proud parents, when presented with the medal and Shield.
Molly Muller as reverend Elder of the Club did the honours of Presenting the Medals and Shield to the winners and said in her speech how proud she was of the long history of the East Brisbane Club and it’s achievements, now they were adding another item of history by starting a Singles Gateball Shield in the support of all Mallet Sports.
The whole event was conducted with excellence by Herman Bekker as Manager and ably supported by Doug Williams, President with all Club members joining in and putting on a sausage sizzle to finish the event off. Many participants commented on how good it was to be able to mix and socialise during the 30 minute break between games and how much they were learning about strategy when playing singles, all in all a good result and the Club looks forward to an even bigger Tournament next year.
