Mallet Sports on the Broadwater, 6 July 2007
An innovation for Southport Croquet Club this year was a week of mallet sports the Winter Carnival – Mallet Sports on the Broadwater held in the first weekend of July. With sunny days, $1000 prize money spread over all events including Ricochet, Golf Croquet and Gateball, and fierce competition, the event was a resounding success with many friendships being made and renewed.
Friday July 6 was the day for Gateball. Southport members had only been playing for three weeks so were new to it all. Keith McLeod organized and refereed. Five teams entered Ipswich 1, Ipswich 2, the Caloundra Alligators, Broadbeach and the Southport Eagles. Practice games were played in the morning followed by a buffet lunch and then the competition in the afternoon. Games were fast and exciting. All teams played with great enthusiasm.
An innovation for a competition like this was a smorgasbord lunch with club members providing meats and salad. For $6 players could help themselves to the buffet. This was very successful from both the players point of view and from those helping in the kitchen. To make sandwiches for 40 people (as we had on Friday) would have been a daunting task!
The Gateball Shield was won by The Ipswich 1 team. The Shield was presented by Joanne Rooks from Bendigo Bank. The Caloundra Alligators came second and the very new and rapidly put together Southport team captained by Bruce McAlister, third, but only just, after a countback between Southport and Broadbeach.
