Mallet Sports on the Broadwater 2010

The final two days of Southport’s Winter Carnival Mallet Sports on the Broadwater were taken with Gateball. Because of so many entries and only two days to play both doubles and teams an XYZ knock out competition was held for the doubles. This of course meant that some players only played two games and others played 6 or 8. Next year this will not happen as we will have four days for Gateball rather than two. Broadbeach very kindly helped out with providing their lawns where one block played, the other two blocks played at Southport where  the finals were held. Players were from Queensland, ACT, Victoria  as well as pairs from India and Japan.  The finals were very exciting held late in the afternoon between two Japanese ladies (Kayako Yamazaki and Miyoko Kawada) and two from Caloundra. The Japanese players were wonderful to watch but the Caloundra ladies gave them a good run for their money. The Japanese were successful in winning the Shield.

With 14 teams the final day of Gateball was busy and full. Teams came from India, Japan ,Canberra and Kew, Victoria combined, Bribie Island (a new combined team), Broadbeach, Caloundra, Ipswich, Rockhampton, Toowoomba, McIlwraith (2 teams). East Brisbane (a new team) and Southport(2 teams).

With two blocks and an international team in each block the games were exciting. Our young players David Hughes, aged 12, and Chris Wentworth, aged 9, were quite formidable in their understanding of the game, especially David who is becoming an excellent Team Captain, giving the East Brisbane team a run for their money. The finals were played between the top teams from each block, in the late afternoon under lights between Japan and Ipswich and the match for the third place was between India and Canberra Kew (their game was in semi darkness). After an exciting finish Ipswich is to be congratulated on winning the event with Japan second and India third.

The whole tournament was great fun.  We are especially grateful to Sue Hughes and her family as well as helpers from Southport, who did all the catering for the Gateball event a total of approximately 120 lunches and morning and afternoon tea.
