McIlwraith Challenge, 21 March 2010

The McIlwraith Challenge is a combined doubles/team event in which three game rubbers are contested for a total of five points. Club or composite teams play one another and earn three points for each team win. Two pairs from each team also play games to complete a rubber. The team with the most points is declared the winner. At the end of the day, Ipswich Strikers topped Pool A with 15 points and Toowoomba topped pool B with 14 Points.

The 2010 competition was complicated because a record number of twelve teams nominated to play for what, in previous years, had been a one day competition. This necessitated the formation of two pools.  A team game playoff between the two clubs with the most team game wins  was necessary to determine which team gained maximum points for the Interclub Challenge. Ipswich Strikers won this game and were awarded the McIlwaith Challenge Cup.

Each team  played a hectic schedule of five rounds of doubles and team games which many players found tiring although the innovative format of the competition earned praise from many players. The timing, format and structure of the competition will be reviewed for 2011.
