New South Wales Gateball Championships 2007
Canberra, 27-28 October
Canberra 2 has retained the NSW Gateball Championships winning all 6 of their matches in Saturday’s team competition.
Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales were all represented with teams competing from Broadbeach, Kew, Burden Park, Epping/Brunswick as well as Canberra.
The round robin competition saw Canberra 2 joined in the final by Canberra 1, who finished with 3 wins. Kew also finished with 3 wins however were edged out of the final by points differential. Burden Park and Broadbeach finished 4th and 5th respectively, with 2 wins each.
The final was a tactical, low-scoring match with Canberra 2 coming out on top 10-7.
On Sunday, Victorian double combinations stood out on a day of changing weather conditions. The final saw Sue Leitinger and Chris Langford from Brunswick defeat Maxine and Alec McLachlan from Kew 12-8.
In the qualifying rounds Block A was dominated by Maxine and Alec who were undefeated with 5 wins. Glen Whitehead and Kristina Huynh from Canberra finished second with 4 wins.
Block B saw an extremely tight competition with all five pairings finishing with 2 wins and 2 losses. A superior points differential allowed Sue and Chris to move into the final ahead of Mike Hunter and Kim Trent from Canberra.
Sue and Chris took control of the final from the outset scoring regularly through gate 2. They maintained their lead throughout and, despite a late flurry of points from Alec, held on to win 12-8.
During the presentations Gilon Smith, the new National Director of Gateball, paid tribute to outgoing National Director Keith McLeod. Gilon made particular reference to Keith’s successes in developing the popularity of Gateball in Australia.
The NSW Championships were seen as an important lead-up for the upcoming National Championships. Teams vowed to continue refining their tactics and skills in preparation for the tough Australian and international competition expected at the Nationals
