New South Wales Gateball Championships 2009
Over 30 Gateballers from Victoria, the ACT and Queensland participated in the NSW Gateball Championships, held in hot weather at the Canberra Croquet Club on 14 and 15 November 2009.
Six teams contested the teams event on Saturday – the Bilbies, Wombats and Kew from Victoria and three teams from Canberra. Kew were the stand out team in the block stage winning all their matches. Second place came down to countback after Canberra Red and the Wombats from Brunswick tied on wins and net points, the Wombats won the group match between these two teams and therefore made the final.
The final was a close contest between two strong teams (both semi-finalists from the recent National Gateball Championships). The Wombats finished victorious after some late points gave them a win 11-11 on countback.
Sunday saw 11 pairs compete in 28 matches in two blocks. Canberra teams competed strongly having members in all four semi-final combinations.
The winners of Block A Glen Whitehead and Kristina Huynh defeated Tim Goodland and Bryan Johnson in the first all Canberra semi-final. In the second semi-final Peter Freer and his partner from Rockhampton Greg Featherstone defeated the previously unbeaten Gilon Smith and Daniel Casey despite Gilon Smith successfully making the “mythical” splice shot through gate 1. The splice shot involves hitting the right hand leg of gate 1 extremely hard and the ball deflecting to sit very close to gate 2 ready to pass the second gate.
The final saw Greg and Peter make a much stronger start and take a healthy lead in the first 15 minutes. Despite a late comeback from Glen and Kristina, Greg and Peter hung on for a tight win 11-10.
The success of the competition was largely a result of the participation of fifteen Canberra members and the strong ongoing support from Victorian clubs.
