New South Wales Gateball Championships 2010

The 5th NSW Gateball Championships were held at the Canberra Croquet Club from 20-21 November. Competitors travelled from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland for the event. The event was historic for being the last state or national championships before the removal of the double touch.

Saturday saw a busy program with seven teams playing in a round robin competition. The block was tight and with one round remaining all seven teams could mathematically qualify for the final. The final outcome saw Brunswick and Kew qualifying for an all Victorian final. Third place was a combined Epping/McIlwraith team with players from different clubs (and different states) playing together well and only missing the final on points difference.

The final could have gone either way with both teams having chances to control the match. Ultimately the result was a repeat of 2009 with a 2-point victory to the Brunswick Wombats. Special mention should go to Bungo and Kumiko Futagawa who were winners in their first Gateball tournament playing with the Brunswick side on loan from the Kew side.

Sunday was a day of speed and colour as the four Gateball courts were buzzing with colourful uniforms and the cries of the referees. A novel three-block draw saw stiff competition for quarter-final spots. The highlight was a ‘perfect game’ by Sue Leitinger and Chris Langford from Brunswick which included several double and gate touches.

The quarter-finals followed earlier form with the three block winners comfortable winning through to the semi-finals.

In the first semi-final Alex and Penny Park defeated Maxine and Alec MacLachlan from Kew 16-9 in an all mother and son affair. In the other semi‑final Glen Whitehead and Kristina Huynh from Canberra defeated Sue Leitinger and Chris Langford from Brunswick 12 - 8.

A crowd of around 30 people witnessed a tight and tense final. Glen and Kristina successfully executed an all-off strategy which gave them control of the early proceedings. Alex and Penny worked back to control the match through the middle and took a one-point lead into the dying seconds. On the last turn of the match Kristina was able to spark a ball from five meters through gate 2 to tie the scores and win the match on countback 8-8.

The organisers from Canberra made special mention of the Bilbies, Brunswick Wombats and Kew from Victoria, members of the McIlwriath club in Brisbane and the Epping club in Sydney for their continued support of the NSW Gateball Championships.
