Queensland Gateball Championships 2007
Ipswich 11-13 August
Playing at only their first State Championships, Broadbeach have returned the Lola Whyte memorial trophy to Queensland hands. Captained by outgoing National Director of Gateball, Keith McLeod, the relative new-comers were victors in all but one of their matches.
The competition saw ten teams from Rockhampton, Caloundra, Southport, Broadbeach, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Brisbane and Canberra play under idyllic conditions at the Ipswich Croquet Club.
Last years’ winners Canberra were runners up; their aggressive style reflected in a points differential of +57, despite two losses. Also putting in strong displays were Ipswich Maroon and McIlwraith, who placed third and fourth respectively.
In the doubles, Canberrans Glen Whitehead and Kristina Huynh come out on top of 13 teams to win the inaugural Queensland pairs title. Whitehead and Huynh, current Victorian doubles champions, made it through the competition undefeated to add the Queensland title to their trophy cabinet. They overcame the pinpoint accuracy of Liz Kent (Southport) and Barbara Golding (Rockhampton) to win a gripping final 10‑8.
Once again, the Queensland Championships were a well organised competition, this time supported by a small army of volunteers from the Ipswich club. While most players lamented shots that could have been, no one could complain of having missed a meal.
With the number of clubs increasing each year and Caloundra already preparing for the 2008 Queensland Championships, the future of gateball is looking bright in the Sunshine State.
