Tavender Trophy (Canberra Gateball Competition) 2008

Sunday 13 April

Sunday 13 April saw the second annual Canberra Croquet Club Gateball tournament, the Tavender Trophy. The morning was greeted by seventeen colourfully dressed gateballers representing three teams Green, Red and Blue.

Teams contained a mix of gateballers of all levels of experience with new players often upstaging their more experienced team mates. For example the round robin matches were highlighted by an extraordinary long range gate and double touch by Nola de Chazal in her first game of competitive gateball.

All teams notched up a win in the round robin competition with teams Red and Blue progressing to the final on a points differential.

Team Blue was victorious in the final with the winning team comprising of Kimberlee Trent, Gilon Smith, Bruce Edwards, Tim Murphy and Nola de Chazal.

Fortuitous timing saw a brief hailstorm hit at lunchtime so it did not disrupt play. Peter Freer, displaying incredible commitment, continued to practice passes of Gate 1 with hailstones bouncing around his feet (check out the photo!).

Thanks goes to Kimberlee for her work in preparing the lunch.

The afternoon comprised a doubles competition. Doubles pairings consisted of a regular gateball player and a not‑so‑regular gateballer. This ensured even competition with most matches remaining in the balance until the dying stages. Kimberlee Trent and Bruce Edwards were joined in the final by Glen Whitehead and Johanna Pask with both doubles pairings moving through their group undefeated.

The final was tightly fought however some key sparks by Johanna and Glen saw them come away with victory and the second annual Tavender Trophy.
Thanks to all competitors who, through their participation, ensured the day was a great success.
