Victorian Gateball Championships 2007
The new VCA Headquarters at Cairnlea was the inaugural venue for the 2007 Victorian Gateball Championships held over the weekend of 26-27 May 2007.
It was especially pleasing to have the National Director of Gateball, Keith McLeod, from Broadbeach in Queensland and players from Canberra competing.
Cold and blustery conditions greeted around 30 players for the team event on Saturday. Five teams competed in a block draw that resulted in some excellent play and several close results. Brunswick, who won seven out of eight games, was again the standout team and won the event for the sixth year running. Canberra came in a close second, winning five games. Burden Park and Kew also put in a good showing.
Players were again greeted with windy weather on Sunday for the pairs event. A close contest ensued throughout the day between Glen Whitehead and Kristina Huynh from Canberra and Clare Hopkins and Neil Maclachlan from Kew. At the end of play, both couples had six wins, but superior net points made Glen and Kristina deserved winners on the day.
On behalf of the World Gateball Union, Keith McLeod made a special presentation to Joan Goff in recognition of the exceptional work done by Gerry Allott to promote the sport of Gateball in Victoria.
Keith was particularly impressed with a ‘jump touch’ performed by Neil Maclachlan to gain position in a game and was equally impressed with the strategies employed by Alec Maclachlan given his youth and level of experience.
Valerie Haseloff, VCA President, made presentations for the team and pairs events. She gave special thanks to Iris and Frank Williams and Shirley Hallinan for their wonderful assistance over the weekend.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Australian Gateball Championships in November 2007 at Cairnlea and again next year.
