Victorian Gateball Championships 2007
For the sixth consecutive year, Brunswick have taken out the Victorian Gateball Championships team event, while, for the second consecutive year, a team from Canberra have claimed the doubles title.
Around 30 gateballers gathered on 26 and 27 May 2007 at the Victorian Croquet Centre in Cairnlea.
Saturday was the teams event, and, after 20 matches – most of them nail-bitingly close – Brunswick emerged the champions winning seven of their eight matches. Their undeniable skill was evident from the start, while their ability to extricate themselves from tough positions in the last five minutes of a game taught the other teams the virtue of patience. Canberra came in a close second, winning five and losing three. Burden Park, Essendon and Kew also put in a good showing.
The Sunday doubles event was an equally tight fight with nine pairs competing. It took a points differential to separate the champions – the Canberra pair of Kristina Huynh and Glen Whitehead (a member of the 2006 champion pair) and the runners up – Neil Maclachlan and Clare Hopkins.
While the weather was a little windy and the flatness of the courts somewhat variable, everyone had a great time playing gateball at the new superb facility.
Well done to Elaine Coverdale and the organisers. I look forward to returning for the Australian Championships in November.
