Victorian Gateball Championships 2008
The reign of 6-time Victorian Champions, Brunswick, came to an end on Saturday 24 May as Canberra took out the Victorian Gateball Championships for the first time.
The team event was a tight affair with Brunswick, Canberra and surprise packets Terang in the running for the trophy until the final round of matches. The final results saw Canberra and Terang both finishing with six wins out of their eight matches. Canberra won the day with a superior points difference. Brunswick finished third with 5 wins, Essendon fourth with two wins and Burden Park also recorded a win.
“It’s great for the team to come away with the Victorian Gateball Championship after all our training over the last couple of months. The tournament is always well organised with plenty of matches, we had lots of fun” enthused Glen Whitehead the captain of the Canberra team.
Sunday 25 May saw thirteen pairings compete in the doubles competition. The competition was split into two blocks with first and second place from each block progressing to knockout semi-finals.
Block A saw Glen Whitehead and Tim Goodland from Canberra unbeaten on top with Gilon Smith and Mike Hunter, also from Canberra, finishing in second place with one loss.
Block B saw Sue and Chris Leitinger from Brunswick progressing undefeated with Alec and Maxine Maclachlan from Kew finishing second with one loss. Alec and Maxine are to be applauded for completing a perfect game (scorning 25 points), a rare accomplishment in competition play.
Alec and Maxine carried over this fine form defeating Glen and Tim in the first semi-final. The second semi-final saw Gilon and Mike edge out Sue and Chris.
The final was very tight with play highlighted by several long gates from both teams. The match see-sawed for the full 30 minutes until Mike pegged a ball in the final seconds to put the Canberra pair ahead 13-12.
As always, the event was well run by tournament manager Elaine Coverdale and her assistants. The Canberra team looks forward to defending their title next year where several Victorian teams have vowed to take back the title
