Victorian Gateball Championships 2009
Brunswick have won the Victorian Gateball teams championship for the seventh time in eight years, while Sue Leitinger and Chris Langford – also from Brunswick – won the doubles title.
More than 30 gateballers gathered on 23 and 24 May 2009 at the Victorian Croquet Centre in Cairnlea for the Victorian Gateball Championship. The teams event was held on Saturday, and Brunswick dominated the day emerging the unbeaten champions. Kew finished second with three wins and a superior net points differential to Canberra and the other Brunswick team, which also finished with three victories.
The Sunday doubles event was well attended with fourteen pairs competing. A tough group stage saw four strong teams win through to the knockout stage. In the semi-finals, Sue and Chris defeated Maxine and Alec McLachlan from Kew while Glen Whitehead and Tim Goodland defeated the previously unbeaten Daniel Casey and Philip Brown in an all Canberra matchup. Sue and Chris then defeated Glen and Tim in the final to win their first Victorian doubles championship.
As usual, the event ran smoothly thanks to the work of Elaine Coverdale and the organisers. It will be good to see as many of the Victorian teams as possible test themselves against teams from other states and oversease at the National Gateball Championships to be held in Rockhampton in October this year.
