Victorian Gateball Championships 2011

The Championships were held on the weekend of the 28th & 29th May at Croquet Headquarters, Cairnlea. We were spared the rain and wind, and despite the overcast and cool conditions enjoyed very acceptable weather for the Victorian Gateball Championships of 2011.

We acknowledge the sponsorship of Toyota Motor Corporation of Australia, Fujitsu Ten (Australia) Pty Ltd, Woolworths (Deer Park) and Bakers Delight (Deer Park) with gratitude.

The Teams event was played on Saturday the 28th of May. There were six entries in the round robin competition: Bilbies, Brunswick Bruisers, Canberra, Kew, Terang Gofors and Terang Trumpers.

The competition was lively and entertaining with the scores not necessarily reflecting the endeavour of those participating. All teams played in the true spirit of the game and I think all players will have gone home with a sense of satisfaction at having given the competition their best shot. There were excellent examples of long touches, slide/rush shots and set ups for gate and touches by all teams. The undulations of Court 2, in particular, added spice to some of the shot making. But at the end of the day, Canberra, under the cool captaincy of Glen Whitehead were rewarded for their strategy and consistent execution of skilful shots. They finished winners, having won 4 out of 5 games. Kew and Bilbies finished with 3 wins each. However, Kew with 9 net points, as opposed to Bilbies with -2 net points, were runners-up. An interesting note is that the one game Canberra lost was to the Bilbies.

The Pairs Event, held on Sunday the 29th of May, was played in 2 blocks of 6 pairs. Block A was won by Neil Maclachlan and Trish Watts(Kew) with Sue Leitinger and Chris Langford(Brunswick) runners-up. Both pairs had 4 wins each but Neil and Trish had more net points.

Block B was won by Glen and Kristina Whitehead(Canberra) who, on the way to their clean sweep of the block, achieved the perfect score of 25 in one game. The runners-up were Elaine Coverdale(Essendon) and Chas Quin(Brunswick).

It must be said that despite the varying scores, the blocks were very evenly matched and, on the whole, games quite tight. There was a complete mix of tactics from the aggressive risk taking to the carefully planned and executed, as tends to be a feature of pairs gateball.

In the semi finals Neil & Trish defeated Elaine & Chas, 13-12, and Sue & Chris defeated Glen & Kristina, 16-13. Sue & Chris defeated Neil & Trish, 11-10, in the final with Sue’s careful control of gate 2 playing a major role in their win. The game was gripping to watch with great shots executed by both pairs.

The gateballers were supported before and throughout the weekend by a magnificent army of volunteers. We say a big thankyou to all of them.
