Previous Questions:
QUESTION: When sparking, is it a foul if the stroker hits their foot but the touched ball stills travels further than 10cm?
ANSWER: If the head of the mallet hits only the foot and not the ball, then this is a foul. (Chapter 6, Article 16, Clause 4(1)(5) of the 2007 rules (p30))
If, however, the head of the mallet touches both the foot and the ball and the same time, it is not a foul (Chapter 6, Article 16, Clause 2(2)(5) page 29)).
QUESTION: What happens if a stroker's ball passes through first gate but touches another ball after the gate?
ANSWER: A number of rules come into play here. First, for a successful pass through gate 1 to be made, the ball has come to a stop within the inside line (Article 13, clause(2)(1) page 26). The movement of the touched ball in this situation is considered an invalid move and is therefore returned to where it was (Article 11, Clause 2(1)(3) page 19). Finally, Article 15, Clause 1(2) confirms that the situation is not considered a touch. Therefore, the player can touch the other ball after it has been returned to its original position.
QUESTION: When ball 4 is stroked from the starting area it fails to pass Gate 1 but hits ball 2 (which is on the court) and knocks it out of play. Ball 4 has not succeeded coming into play but - does ball 2 get replaced in the position it was in before it was hit?
ANSWER: Yes. The rules specify that it is an invalid move to hit another ball before your ball has successfully passed through gate one (Article 11, Clause 2, Section 3). In the case of this invalid move, both balls are replaced in their original positions (Article 11, Clause 2, Section 1)
QUESTION: What happens if when a sparked ball hits a gate or the goal-pole and then strikes the stroker’s shoe or stroker’s ball?
ANSWER: For a full answer and a couple of examples, please open this guide prepared by Keith Mcleod and Gilon Smith.
QUESTION: Ball 6 is touching a gate leg. Ball 3 (an in-ball) is stroked and touches the other leg of the gate. As a result ball 6 moves away from the gate leg it was touching. Should it be replaced?
ANSWER: No. Ball 6 remains where it is (This situation is not listed as an invalid move in Article 11, Clause 2).
QUESTION: Does a ball have to be placed wholly in the start area in order to start stoking at the beginning of a game? Specifically, must it be behind the outer edge of the inside line?
ANSWER: No. Only part of the ball must be in the starting area (Article 12, Clause 2).
